GS1 is an international non-profit organization that develops global standards for the identification and communication of products, services, and locations. It is best known for the barcode (EAN barcode), which can be found on almost every product in retail.

What exactly does GS1 do?

GS1 develops and manages global standards for:

Identification

  • Products: e.g., using the GTIN (Global Trade Item Number, formerly EAN)
  • Locations: using the GLN (Global Location Number)
  • Shipments: using the SSCC (Serial Shipping Container Code)

Labeling

  • For example, using barcodes and 2D codes like QR and DataMatrix codes, which are machine-readable.

Data Communication

  • Exchange of standardized product data (e.g., via GDSN – Global Data Synchronization Network)

Traceability & Transparency

  • Systems for tracking goods along the supply chain, especially for food, pharmaceuticals, or logistics.

Interoperability & Digitization

  • Support for the digitalization of supply chains through standardized interfaces and processes.

What is GS1 used for in practice?

  • Retailers scan barcodes at the checkout → the GS1 standard uniquely identifies the product.
  • Logistics companies track shipments using SSCC codes on pallets.
  • Online shops use GTINs to label products on Google Shopping, Amazon, or eBay.
  • Manufacturers transmit standardized product data to trading partners via the GS1 GDSN network.

Who is behind it?

  • GS1 Global is the international umbrella organization (headquartered in Brussels).
